Failover internet solutions: what your business needs when downtime isn’t an option

There was a time when being unreachable was simply part of doing business. You left a message with the receptionist and waited for a call back. Today, the expectations are very different. Customers expect immediate responses, and critical online tools now sit at the heart of daily operations. When the internet goes down, everything from processing orders and handling support tickets to taking card payments can grind to a halt. Even a brief outage can mean lost sales, frustrated customers, and a knock to your reputation.

To unpack what this means and why it matters, we spoke with Mike Watts, Group Operations Director, and Brian Ross, Group Technical Director at Orbital Net. What failover internet actually does 

Mike explains: “Downtime is minimised, allowing critical systems to remain available while traffic automatically transfers to the backup connection. There may be a short delay while the failover takes place, but the aim is to keep disruption to your team and customers to a minimum.”

Failover internet is a backup connection that activates the moment your primary line fails. There is no manual switching limiting disruption. No scrambling to troubleshoot. If the main fibre line is damaged by roadworks or equipment faults, the backup takes over, and your business keeps moving. 

The concept is simple, but the execution is not. Backup capacity needs to be fast and stable enough to carry essential operations. It must also be designed around how your team works, what systems are critical, and how your locations are set up.

What is your Recovery Time Objective?  

When businesses think about failover, one of the most important questions is often the simplest: how long can you afford to be without your internet connection? 

This is where Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) become important. An RTO sets out how quickly a business needs to restore access to its critical systems following an outage. 

For some businesses, a few minutes of disruption may be manageable. For others, even a short interruption could affect payments, customer communications, cloud applications, security systems, and more. 

Failover is designed to reduce this interruption by automatically moving traffic from the primary connection to the backup. However, it is important to understand that failover is not necessarily completely instantaneous. Depending on the network, equipment, and configuration, there may be a brief interruption while the backup connection takes over. 

The important question is therefore not simply “Do we have a backup connection?”, but “What happens when our main connection fails, and how quickly can we keep our critical services running?”

A good failover strategy should consider:

  • How quickly the backup connection takes over and whether there is any interruption during the switch.
  • Which services are business-critical and need to remain operational during an outage.
  • How much bandwidth those key services require, and whether the backup connection is appropriately sized to support them.
  • Which services can be prioritised during a failover, such as voice, cloud applications, payments or other essential systems.
  • How the business will operate if the primary connection remains unavailable for an extended period.

The aim isn’t necessarily to replicate your full primary connection. It’s about understanding what your business needs to keep running and ensuring your backup has enough capacity to support those critical services when it matters most.

The real cost of being offline 

It is easy to think of an internet outage as an inconvenience until you consider what your team actually relies on the connection for. 

A recent survey of 500 UK SME decision-makers found that 91% had experienced internet outages, while 94% reported experiencing poor internet connectivity. The same research found that SMEs could be losing up to three hours of productivity each month because of poor connectivity or outages.

The impact isn’t limited to employees being unable to access the internet. The survey found that internet problems can affect everything from processing online orders and payments to customer service and in-person card payments. 

So, ask yourself: If your main connection went down tomorrow, what would stop working? 

Could your team continue working? Could customers still contact you? Could you take payments? Could staff access the systems they need? How long could you operate before the disruption started to have a financial impact? 

And perhaps most importantly: 

Do you know how long your business would actually be offline before your backup connection took over?
