Sheppey United F.C.

Introduction

By the summer of 2014, the club returned to its historic name, Sheppey United F.C. Since then, Holm Park has undergone significant enhancements, including the addition of perimeter fencing, new dressing rooms, a refurbished clubhouse, floodlights, spectator stands, and extensive pitch improvements with levelling, drainage, and a modern sprinkler system. These investments have transformed the grounds, supporting the club’s growth and development. As development expanded, so did the need for sufficient internet.

Sheppey United F.C.

Sheppey United F.C, established in 1890 through the merger of Sheerness Victoria and Invicta, originally played at the Sheppey United Cricket Club ground on Botany Road. In June 2013, the club merged with Sheerness East F.C to form Sheppey & Sheerness United F.C, competing in the Kent County League Premier Division and hosting home games at Holm Park, previously known as the Canning Town Gasworks and later the Sheerness Steel Sports Ground.

Research & Development

Previous Connectivity Setup And Issues

Sheppey United F.C, a cornerstone of the Isle of Sheppey community, was experiencing significant challenges with their existing connectivity provider. The unstable connection was impacting both their day-to-day operations and customer satisfaction. Their card payment systems were frequently failing, causing staff to rely on mobile hotspots, resulting in delays, long queues, and a loss of sales during peak times. Additionally, their academy players, who relied on internet access for classroom activities, were facing connectivity issues due to the classroom’s location in a separate mobile building away from the main site.

Why Were They Looking To Change Providers

Sheppey United F.C faced frequent issues with their card machines going offline, leading to significant operational disruptions and lost sales during matches and events. Staff were often forced to rely on mobile hotspots, which proved unreliable and inefficient, causing delays and frustration for both employees and fans.

The club’s academy classroom, housed in a separate mobile structure, struggled to maintain a stable connection to the main site’s network. This poor connectivity hindered students’ ability to participate in online learning, limiting access to essential educational resources.

During Sheppey United’s high-profile FA Cup run in 2023, televised matches and media coverage placed additional demands on the club’s network. To support the increased activity and broadcasting requirements, temporary high-speed connectivity solutions were essential to ensure seamless operations on and off the pitch.

Why They Chose Orbital Net

After conducting a comprehensive assessment of the available broadband speeds in the area, Orbital Net identified that the existing connectivity was not capable of supporting Sheppey United’s expanding operational demands. Frequent network outages and slow speeds were affecting everything from card machine transactions to online learning for academy students.

Recognising these challenges, Orbital Net proposed a bespoke solution designed to provide fast, stable, and resilient connectivity across the entire site. With our expertise in delivering high-performance internet for businesses and organisations, we ensured Sheppey United F.C had the bandwidth and reliability required to support matchday operations, academy learning, and media coverage—including the demands of their FA Cup run in 2023.

The Solution

Designing a Winning Connectivity Formula

To overcome slow internet speeds, we implemented a 4-Line Bond solution, delivering a significantly faster and more reliable connection than the club’s previous service. This upgrade immediately resolved ongoing issues with card machine failures and eliminated the need for staff to depend on mobile hotspots, ensuring smooth transactions on matchdays and beyond.

To extend connectivity between the main site and the academy classroom, we deployed point-to-point wireless links, providing a stable and seamless internet connection. This solution enabled academy players and Sheppey United F.C staff to stay online without interruptions, improving both educational and operational efficiency.

During Sheppey United’s thrilling FA Cup run in 2023, we delivered temporary wireless deployments to meet the club’s increased bandwidth demands. This ensured smooth operations for live-streamed matches, media coverage, and event management, allowing the club to shine on a national stage without technical limitations.

The Result

The solutions we implemented had a transformative impact on Sheppey United Football Club. Their internal operations became smoother, with reliable card machine functionality, which eliminated customer frustration and increased sales. The academy players gained consistent internet access in their classroom, enriching their learning environment.

Furthermore, our partnership with Sheppey United has since grown beyond just providing connectivity to the club itself. We’ve agreed to make Sheppey a WiMAX Repeater Site, which allows us to extend wireless internet connectivity to nearby businesses through line-of-sight connections. This collaboration is helping to bridge the digital divide in the surrounding areas, bringing high-speed internet to local businesses that previously had limited options.

By working closely with Sheppey United Football Club, we not only resolved their immediate connectivity challenges but also helped them become a key player in bringing modern, reliable internet access to their wider community. Our ongoing relationship is a testament to the power of innovative connectivity solutions and the positive impact they can have on both a business’s operations and the broader local economy.
